Sting

listen

In May of 1983 the band "The Police" released their fifth and final album which included one of their biggest hits, "Every Breath You Take". In that year the song was at the top of the UK charts for 4 weeks and for twice that long in the US. Believe it or not Sting had to fight to get the song on the album. Today, over 20 years later, Sting still earns £715 a day from US airplay alone. Since he wrote the song when he was in the middle of breaking up with his first wife Frances Tomelty many saw it as a possessive reaction to the split. The first time you hear it it sounds like just another pretty love song. The lyrics are very simple even though the underlying context is subtle. But if you listen more carefully you begin to notice a darker, more sinister mood.
