Graffiti

listen

Simon and Garfunkel sang that the words of the prophets were written on the subway walls and the tenement halls. New York City graffiti got its start in the late 60s with tagging, a graphic representation of a person’s personal signature. Graffiti became a very serious problem during this period because NYC had just begun to substitute its old subway cars with brand new air conditioned models. The mayor was understandably furious. For some people graffiti is an act of rebellion against corruption and injustice while others view it as a creative art form. Graffiti artists feel that they make the city more attractive by painting all those blank, ugly walls. Perhaps the money spent on graffiti clean up should be invested in youth education programs that provide an outlet for their artistic creativity. From those city officials who consider graffiti nothing more than vandalism we can’t expect any solutions.
