False Friends - L

Lately

Lately has nothing to do with the word late. Lately means "últimamente".

I haven't seen Peter lately. Is he away on a trip?

Likely

Likely means to be reasonably expected, probable.

The equivalent to the Spanish "es probable que ocurra" would be

"It is likely to happen...." not "It is probable to happen...".

On the other hand you can say:

It's very likely or highly probable that we won't finish on time.

Others examples would be:

"He is the most likely or probable candidate for the job.

He will likely or probably get the job.

He will be the probable/likely winner."
