Algunas conjunciones importantes
Although / Though / Even though
In spite of / Despite / Because (of)
La conjunción and se usa para unir dos ideas negativas o positivas:
He doesn't smoke and (he) doesn't drink.
They live in the country and (they) work in the city.
But se usa cuando existe contraste:
They booked the table at the restaurant but they decided to stay home.
The weather was terrible but we had a good time.
Or se puede usar para indicar la posibilidad de hacer una o varias cosas:
Do you want to go to the cinema or the theatre?
También se usa en frases negativas:
He doesn't smoke or drink.
Ponemos so (así que, por lo tanto) con el resultado y because (porque) con la causa o razón:
We were tired so we went home.
We went home because we were tired.
Although / Though / Even though
Los tres significan lo mismo (aunque). La única diferencia es que though puede ir al final de la frase:
Even though / Although she studied hard, she didn't pass the exam.
She didn't pass the exam, even though / although she studied hard.
She didn't pass the exam; she studied hard though.
In spite of / Despite / Because (of)
Los tres tienen un significado parecido (a causa de, a pesar de) pero la construcción varía:
It was raining. The match was canceled.
The match was canceled because it was raining.
The match was canceled because of the rain.
It was raining. They played the match.
They played the match in spite of the rain.
They played the match despite the rain.
They played the match despite of the fact that it was raining.
Unless (a no ser, a menos que) se usa para expresar una condición para la realización de una acción:
If I finish my homework I'll go out.
I won't go out unless I finish my homework.
Unless I finish my homework I won't go out.
