El artículo definido the se usa para una persona o cosa específica, es decir, conocida, de la que ya hemos hablado o única:
Are you going to the party?
What do you think about the new teacher?
The weather was terrible yesterday.
Por lo tanto no se puede usar cuando el sentido es general o genérico:
I don't like people who smoke.
Planes are safer than cars.
Life is life.
Tampoco se usa con ciertas palabras cuando nos referimos al uso genérico del lugar mencionado:
What time do you go to bed?
Where do you go to school?
Se usa delante del adjetivo superlativo:
Today was the worst day of my life!
También se usa delante de nombres, en singular, en sentido genérico que proceden de una clase:
The bicycle is a wonderful form of transport.
The chicken came before the egg.
I can play the guitar.
Se usa con adjetivos para referirnos a grupos de personas:
The rich get richer while the poor get poorer.

Se usa con nombres de océanos, mares, ríos y canales:

Se usa con nombres de personas y lugares en plural:
