El uso del subjuntivo en inglés es muy limitado. Se puede usar para expresar peticiones, órdenes, necesidades, sugerencias, etc:
We insisted that he (should) apologise.
(Insistimos en que se disculpara.)
They recommended that the bill be payed.
(Recomendaron que se pagara la factura.)
It's necessary that we discuss this.
(Es necesario que discutamos esto.)
Se usa para expresar deseos:
Long live the King! (¡Viva el Rey!)
La forma del subjuntivo del verbo to be es were:
I wish I were rich. (Ojalá fuera rico.)
If I were you. (Si yo fuera tú.)
Sin embargo hay muchas construcciones en inglés que se traducen como el subjuntivo español. Con los verbos: want, tell, ask, order, command, beg, expect, advise, allow, forbid, etc:
What do you want me to do? (¿Qué quiere que haga?)
Con frases que expresan una posibilidad, sentimiento, opinión o necesidad:
There's no need for you to go. (No hace falta que te vayas.)
May / Might
It may / might rain tomorrow. (Puede que llueva mañana.)
Wish / If only
I wish I were rich! (¡Ojalá fuera rico!)
If only I had more money! (¡Ojalá tuviera más dinero!)
I wish it would stop raining! (¡Ojalá dejara de llover!)
I wish I hadn't bought this car! (¡Ojalá no hubiera comprado este coche!)
Let
Let him go! (¡Deja que se vaya!)
When / As soon as
When I have a moment I'll call you.
(Cuando tenga un momento te llamaré.)
As soon as I finish we'll leave.
(Tan pronto como termine nos iremos.)
Condicionales
If you saw it you would buy it. (Si lo vieras lo comprarías.)
If you had seen it you would have bought it.
(Si lo hubieras visto lo hubieras comprado.)
