Double Negative
From WikiProfe
In English there can only be one negative word in a sentence.
- He hasn't got any money.
- He's got no money.
- He doesn't have any money.
- He has no money.
Two negatives in the same sentence would make the statement positive.
- He doesn't have no money. = It's not true that he has no money. = He has some money.
This also applies to negative adverbs like: barely, hardly, rarely, scarcely and seldom.
- I seldom go to the cinema. = I almost never go to the cinema.
- I could barely understand him. = I almost couldn't understand him.
