When referring to the immediate past or future we use "last" and "next" without the article.
- Next week I'm going to be on vacation.
- Last month we were very busy in the office.
To refer to another week, month, year etc. that neither preceeds nor follows the present we use the article.
- The week before last we hired several new people.
- The year after next I plan to retire.

Next to
"Next to" means beside.
- He lives next to the train station so he doesn't need to commute by car.
