Unnatural

Perhaps the most exasperating moment for the ESL student is when the teacher says that what he has written or said, although not grammatically incorrect, doesn't sound right. At this point serious depression and, in extreme cases, suicidal tendencies on the part of the student are not unheard of. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that the teacher reassures the student by explaining the origin of and the solution to the problem. Until an advanced level is reached, it is difficult for students to avoid falling back on their first language constructions. Limited vocabulary results in overuse which in turn increases the chances that certain words could be used in the wrong context. Lacking a variety of responses to everyday dialogues such as greetings and requests is another cause of unnatural English. The solution is to maximize your contact with authentic English through whatever means you have at your disposal.
