In general, a "holiday" is a special day that is celebrated by the majority of the people. For the most important holidays, often referred to as banking holidays, most businesses and schools are closed.

Next Monday is a holiday so we're all going to have a long weekend.

However, the expressions: to take a holiday/"vacation" or to be/go on holiday(s)/vacation are used to refer to one's personal life.

Larry is doing some work on his house and he's taking three vacation days next week.
